About Us

The Delano Mosquito Abatement District is an independent district formed pursuant to the California Health and Safety Code, Section 2000 et seq. The District was formed in 1944 by the citizens of the North Kern and South Tulare Counties to control pestiferous mosquitoes and protect them from mosquito-borne disease. The District currently serves an area of 477 square miles from Famoso in Kern County north almost to Pixley in Tulare County. The District’s boundaries cover the City of McFarland, Delano, Earlimart and Richgrove.

The Delano Mosquito Abatement District remains dedicated to protecting the health and quality of life of the people in the service area by safely and reliably suppressing mosquitoes and the diseases they carry through surveillance, source reduction, public education and control measures.

The District provides constant surveillance and suppression of disease carrying and pest mosquitoes. Our program currently includes surveillance of West Nile Virus, Western Equine Encephalitis and St. Louis Encephalitis viruses in cooperation with the California Department of Public Health.

The keystone of the District’s control efforts is an integrated pest management program (ipm) which strives to eradicate or significantly reduce mosquito breeding sites, thus eliminating or lessening the amount of pesticides needed. Our program uses an environmentally friendly approach using mosquito-breeding source reduction, bio-rational insecticides and natural predators such as mosquito fish whenever possible.
